Hiding from Her Siblings

I've been photographing fog at the Golden Gate Bridge since 2011 and it's still one of the most mesmerizing scenes you can witness with your eyes. There's something quiet and peaceful about the way it envelopes San Francisco and hides it from the world. Above the fog you have no idea what lays below. This particular morning was one of the most surreal. The fog height was higher than we had expected and hoped and most of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco were hidden from view. Only the tips of the towers were exposed. Beautiful high clouds lit up for a gorgeous sunrise. Had the fog been a hundred feet lower, it would have been the perfect fog morning: low fog and high clouds. Mama Nature makes things difficult for us photographers. With the higher elevation of the fog I looked for different captures to make with the gorgeous view before us. The shape of the fog was wonderful this morning and I wanted to capture the waves it was creating as the early morning light turned the tips of it pink. This is a 2 photo panoramic stitch that I then cropped. I loved how the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge appears to be hiding from the 3 sibling towers of the Bay Bridge. Follow the Pink Fog Road

All of us that live in the Bay Area have grown accustomed to the fog. Although we don't get much rain, we do get fog. It's our version of "weather", and if you live in SF, it's the thing you check on a daily basis in the summer. No fog and there will be a beautiful warm day. But on the days when the fog rolls in, San Francisco can be 20-30 degrees colder than the rest of the area. The forecast had called for low fog on this particular morning, so naturally there were a bazillion photographers on Hawk Hill when I arrived with Zack. I had been to the same spot the morning previous with Willie for another morning of beautiful fog. The fog height was higher than we wanted for the Golden Gate Bridge, so I focused my attention on the way the fog was enveloping San Francisco. I used a longer telephoto lens to get into the city. Cool Blanket

I woke up this morning hoping for low fog at the Golden Gate Bridge. What I mean is that I hoped the elevation of the fog was no higher than the span of the bridge. When it's this height it's a perfect view of the 2 towers, a bit of the road that spans them, and then the city behind. Unfortunately the fog was a bit too high, with only the very tops of the towers showing. A high deck of clouds caught some beautiful color, but it also diffused the sunrise such that it created a beautiful glow on the top of the fog. Rather than photograph the bridge, I threw a longer lens on and focused on the way the fog was enveloping the city.
